| Won’t spin or spins slowly | Unbalanced load, worn drive belt, failed lid switch or door lock, broken motor coupler | Check the lock and switch, inspect belt and coupler, replace the worn part. |
| Leaks onto the floor | Torn door boot gasket, loose hose connection, failed pump or tub seal | Trace the leak with the cabinet open, then replace the gasket, hose or seal. |
| Loud banging or grinding on spin | Worn tub bearings, broken suspension springs or shock absorbers, a coin or bra wire in the pump | Inspect suspension and bearings, remove debris, quote the repair before starting. |
| Won’t fill or fills slowly | Clogged inlet screens, failed water inlet valve, low water pressure | Clean the screens, test the valve coils, replace the valve. |
| Door won’t unlock | Water still in the drum, failed door lock assembly, control fault | Drain the tub, test the lock, replace the lock assembly. |
| Smells musty | Mildew in the door gasket, dirty pump filter, detergent buildup | Clean gasket and filter, run a cleaning cycle, advise on detergent dosing. |
Check these before you call
- Make sure the washer is plugged in and the breaker hasn’t tripped.
- Open both water taps behind the washer all the way.
- If it stopped mid-spin, open it and spread the load out evenly.
- On a front-loader, check the pump filter behind the small panel at the bottom front. Have towels and a shallow pan ready.
- Write down the model number: inside the door rim or under the lid on most machines.
Questions
- Is it worth repairing an older washer?
- Usually, when the fault is a pump, valve, belt, lock or switch: those are modest parts. Bearing and tub failures cost more, and you’ll hear the price before any work starts, along with an honest word if replacing makes more sense.
- Do you work on stacked washer-dryer units?
- Yes, including laundry centers and stacked front-loaders.
- What should I have ready when I call?
- The brand, the model number, what the washer does (or doesn’t do), and any error code on the display.
