Refrigerators, freezers and ice makers: top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side and French door. Once food starts warming up the clock is running, and most cooling faults are a fan, a defrost component, dirty condenser coils or a start relay.

Troubleshooting chart
| Problem | Possible cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Not cooling, but the light is on | Dirty condenser coils, failed condenser fan, compressor start relay | Clean the coils, test the fan and relay, check the compressor. |
| Freezer cold, fridge warm | Frost-blocked evaporator, failed defrost heater or thermostat, evaporator fan | Inspect the evaporator, test the defrost system, replace the failed part. |
| Ice maker stopped making ice | Water supply off or frozen line, failed inlet valve, ice maker module | Check the supply, test the valve and module, replace what failed. |
| Water on the floor or under the crisper drawers | Clogged defrost drain, leaking water line or filter housing | Clear the drain, repair the line or housing. |
| Clicking, buzzing or loud running | Fan blade hitting ice, start relay, condenser fan motor | Find the source, clear the ice, replace a noisy fan or relay. |
| Runs all the time | Dirty coils, worn door gaskets, defrost problem, low refrigerant | Clean coils, check seals, test defrost. Sealed-system work is quoted separately. |
Check these before you call
- Check that the temperature control hasn’t been bumped.
- Make sure food isn’t blocking the air vents inside the fridge and freezer.
- Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out easily, the gasket may not be sealing.
- Listen near the bottom: the condenser fan should run whenever the compressor is running.
- Find the model number on the label inside the fresh-food compartment.
Questions
- How long will my food stay safe?
- USDA guidance: a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours without cooling; a full freezer holds about 48 hours (24 if half full). Keep the doors shut while you wait.
- Can a refrigerant leak be repaired?
- Sometimes. Sealed-system repairs are bigger jobs, so the diagnosis comes first, then the options, including when a replacement is the better value.
- Do you repair built-in refrigerators?
- Mention the brand and model when you call so the right parts can be confirmed before the visit.
